Crossrail stations

Crossrail has been working on new designs for some stations that will bring significant improvements to interchanges with Crossrail line 1.

These plans are constantly being refined and improved as Crossrail continues with the consultation process.

Seven central stations will be constructed alongside existing stations at Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street, Whitechapel and the Isle of Dogs. It is also planned to construct a new station at Woolwich. This will allow Crossrail to be accommodated and work seamlessly alongside existing underground lines.

The facts below highlight some of the benefits future passengers can expect to experience as they pass through Crossrail stations:

  • Wider and longer trains and platforms to reduce the possibility of overcrowding
  • Stations to be more spacious than existing stations - an overall design consideration is to create a feeling of spaciousness
  • The general aim is to create a light, bright space. Tickets halls will utilise natural light wherever possible
  • With step-free access to trains and lifts at all stations, people with impaired mobility will be able to travel easily on Crossrail
  • Platform-edge doors will be used to access trains, enhancing passenger safety
  • London Underground tickets will be valid on Crossrail services, working within the principles of the ‘zonal’ system
  • Air cooling shafts will be incorporated at all stations, ventilating platforms effectively during hot weather
  • Central stations will have two ticket halls, one at either end of the platforms, thus more people are given the chance to easily access Crossrail

In addition to the work on these central stations, Crossrail will extend and improve station facilities along the length of the chosen route.

Other stations being substantially improved are at Romford, Ilford, Custom House and Ealing Broadway. A new station may be constructed at Woolwich.
